I have W3TC connected with Stackpath CDN.
Since several months, uploading images to a post have been taking longer and longer. Started a few seconds, then several seconds, and now it takes about a minute to upload a 100k jpg file.

Search the around the wordpress forums, I found a similar problem that pointed out that enabling “Only purge CDN manually” in the CDN tab fixes the problem. So, I checked the box, saved the settings, and now images are faster as it should be.

However, it’s not clear to me what that setting does, so my questions are:

    1. Why images take a long time to upload when the option isn’t enabled?
    2. What I just enabled?
    3. What’s the actual behavior (actions) of this setting?
    4. How this setting being enabled will affect my everyday posting?
    5. Will reader will see the new content text, styling, and images when I update an already published post?
    6. Do I need to do anything every time I publish or update a post because of enabling this feature?

    Thanks,

    Hello @wppit

Thank you for your inquiry and I am happy to answer.

    1. When you constantly upload images, it may take some time for the CDN to check for those images of they already exist and then the CDN is purged so the new images and changes may take effect.
    2. This option is created mainly to avoid AWS invalidations. This means that the CDN will be purge only manually in Pefrormance>CDN> Purge CDN completely or purge paths.
    3. as explained above, it prevents CDN to be purged automatically so the AWS invalidations can be avoided. As you are not using AWS, you should not worry about this.
    4. It does not affect your posting.
    5. Yes, the images are being uploaded automatically but the CDN is not purged. The new files will be visible. You would purge CDN when making changes to existing posts or images.
6.No you don’t need to do anything except tp purge CDN when some post or image is updated or as I mentioned you can purge individual objects from CDN E.G. https://yourwebsite.com/wp-content/themes/sometheme/images/headers/path.jpg

    Thank you!
