• I just read all the posts about Wangguard going away and needing donors. I think that the lack of donors is really unfortunate, but I doubt it’s driven by anything more than a total lack of knowledge of the problem….followed by an immediate fear that there will be no long-term return on the investment. Saying the plugin will be shut down without donors is a big turn off to donors, IMHO.

@jconti, I love your plugin and you’ve always been great at support. I do not think that you should try to support the plugin with an indiegogo campaign. It’s too risky, and Wangguard is worth much more than that.

The problem with a donation campaign is that donors are reluctant to send in big money, as there is no promise that they will get anything in return for their money. T-shirts are nice, but what users want is for the product to be supported.

Furthermore, how does anyone know about it? I found it through Michael Visser’s post, but I have been using WangGuard for years and did not know you had posted about a need for support several months ago. It has been working fine for me as always.

If you go to a paid model, MANY people will continue using Wangguard for a fee, you will have an income, and users will be happy because they will get ongoing support. It’s a win-win!

@visser — What do you think?

  • Hi @kalico, I’d be happy to assist @jconti in any conversion to a Premium Plugin model but without input from the original developer (e.g. responding to topics, even intermittently) this Plugin looks to either stagnate or more likely rely on hosting company donations (e.g. free hosting server allocation) to keep this Plugin alive as is the current state of affairs.

Your suggestions and thoughts are somewhat surprising as “conversion to a Premium Plugin model” would seem excessive given the fact that a company using, or wanting to use, Wangguard and that is fulfilling the economical terms for becoming a fee paying company would find it quite hard to even learn how to pay for a license or how much. I only remember reading this set up was the thought.

The problem would rather seem to be that @jconti haven’t really laid out these details clearly and made it easy pay and nor has he made it clear what quality of service can be expected for the fees paid, if any beyond what is obvious.

I had clients I wanted to recommend to support this project, but the uncertainty makes this impossible to advocate. Certainty is key, no matter the model chosen.

Bingo @magdamunro, clear communication and consistency in expectations is key to attracting paying customers and both are currently lacking.

The Premium Plugin model wouldn’t apply here as this is a ‘as-a-service’ product but was just a suggestion to get funds coming in to support this developer so resources can be allocated to maintain this Plugin.

Yeah, but I’m quite confused whether @jconti actually wants to get paid. The indiegogo was confusing as well. There already was (hopefully still is) a plan for revenue before, that probably was viable at the set out. At the moment just making it possible to be in a relationship with @jconti and pay a fee, once, monthly or otherwise would be an improvement.

Likely combining that with a basic free service, if at all possible, that would allow a blog starter to jump on at once without hesitation and when the site grew over a certain size, maybe lower than what was though initially, you’d start pay some kind of fee. I think that could be viable and combined with a indiegogo campaign as well for those wanting to further support the project, maybe also not only with money, but with server space or other services.

A great plug-in like this could be a win-win for all involved including @jconti.

The fact that the dev doens’t respond to anything and someone had to figure out how to even get it to work because the email from registration doesn’t send a valid link… makes me think that the plugin is stagnant.

I would have paid a one time fee for the plugin…

On top of that fact… it doesn’t even seem to work. I only got the plugin because we were having an issue with ONE person… always has the username as “appedhek” or “haphek”… whatever.. alwasy ends in “hek”. No matter how many times i have reported this splogger and delete them, and even have a secret code for registration that people have to get from us directly… this like cuck thistle is still getting through…

Now, im having issues with blocking domains… i select the ones i want to block, like the mail.com and such and hit save and it just reloads the page and unchecks them.

It did allow me to do all this days ago… and i even blocked the top level *.ru from the domains… but it still lets this “hek” splogger through…
