• I am trying to set up a subdomain multisite installation.

When I get to the Tools | Network page in the wp admin, I am shown this message:
Because your install is in a directory, the sites in your WordPress network must use sub-directories.

This is just simply wrong. Per https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress
under Moving WordPress Within Your Site
step #5 my WordPress address is identical to the Blog address – both are
    https://<same ip address>

(I’m using ip address at this stage because it’s a dev site)

    Any recommendations?

    Same IP doesn’t matter.

Also please note that in “Moving WordPress” there’s a whole MultiSite Section. You DO NOT and CANNOT move MS the same way as SS. That way lies madness.

However. If they’re both IP addresses and not a domain name, then no, you can’t use Subdomains.

Thanks, the last bit about requiring domain names instead of IP addresses was the critical bit. I set up the hosts file on my local client to map a domain name to that IP address. Then I changed the site url and blog url to use that domain name. Now I can create a subdomain multisite installation.

I think the docs should mention that you can’t use IP addresses, no? I certainly came across no mention of that in the multisite instructions.

I’m a wp newbie but I can certainly change https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Create_A_Network to reflect this fact…

It’s already in there under requirements.

You cannot choose Sub-domain Install in the following cases:
    * WordPress install is in a directory (not in document root).
    * “WordPress address (URL)” is localhost.
    * “WordPress address (URL)” is IP address such as 127.0.0.1.
