want to build site w/ multiple merchants able to sell from it

Hello!

I would like to create a site that allows different vendors to each have their own account from which they can list, manage, and sell their products. Could you point me in the right direction? Best plugins to accomplish this? Best templates? Best program? Can this even be done with WP?
