want to remove “leave a reply” on pages

Hello,

I am new to WP, so in learning mode here. I have a theme which I am modifying and all pages have a “leave a reply” with a comment form. I don’t want this. So I went into the page.php and commented out this: </div><?php comments_template(); ?>
</div>

It worked but it also took away the sidebar navigation on all pages as well. Does anyone have any insights on this?
