• I haven’t yet installed WordPress but I’m considering doing so soon, it seems like the best option but I have multiple questions before I commit, all of these are important and I need simple answers to as many as possible.

My goal… I want to create a blog, but a good one that’s interactive if I can. I’ve written for a long time but feel it’s time to jump off of debate boards and into my own space. The end goal is to make a career out of this and pull in a little money doing it while offering something useful to my readers. I may use the blog to attract those needing freelance writers, but would like to make some income on ads in the meantime. I’ll be using bluehost to create a self hosted wordpress blog is what I’m thinking.

    Questions…

I want to be able to interact with the readers of my blog, id love for them to be able to reply to my post and for me to be able to reply to them if I choose to, id also like for them to be able to subscribe to my blog if possible. Will this sort of flexiblility be available?

I hear I can customize my blog visually, will this mean the ability to change the size and color of text, add thumbnails, add links to outside sources? You can just say yes to all or specify.

Will I be able to create multiple tabs at the top of the page? This is not manditory I suppose, but I do feel it would be nice to be able to have an (about me) section that’s seperate from the main blog page.

Can I even run ads on a self hosted WordPress page to gain a little income?

Where can I go to observe sucsessful, or interesting blogs? I hear reading and commenting on the blogs of others in a sincere way can be a good way to attract others to your blog. (I’m not suggesting spaming) I’d also like to know where to find good blogs so I can get ideas on good page setups.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’m eager to start but questions like the ones above are vital to me. I may have more, but I need answers to all of these before I commit to an annual subscription to bluehost and download wordpress.

  • For everything question as for what can WordPress offer you, the answer is yes.

The self hosted ads part, you can implement google ads within WordPress easily.

If you would like to observe any blogs just do a simple google search and look at what people are doing with their WordPress blogs and copy/optimize/change to suit your needs!

WordPress a platform is extremely flexible and open ended, there is extremely little you can’t accomplish in terms of customization to accomplish what you’re looking for.

I’m happy to answer anymore questions for you, glad you have a keen interest in WordPress and you have chosen a good hosting provider to get started with.

A great place to start is the WordPress Codex.

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/

It offers a wide variety of information, instructions and troubleshooting tips, etc.

Wow, thanks. I was hoping for a (Yes to all) type reply. That’s encouraging news, I’ll take a look at the link you provided. Knowing those basic things was important the next step will be going through with the subscription and learning how to put all of this together.

I’ve never done anything resembling web design before, but I do know what the good ones look like compared to the annoying ones at least. ??

Web Design will come naturally once you get started and putting everything together like a puzzle, I’d compare it to.

But definitely the answer is yes, please don’t hesitate to ask any other questions I’d love to help you get started.

That sounds great, id no doubt have lots of them. Should I ask you through this forum or through a PM? Not even sure if this site has a messenger come to think of it, that was my first post here. ??

I’d say if you’re still getting started I’d say continue asking questions here till you’re up and running.

Then if you run into problems, just create another thread stating the problem and someone will help, if you do follow the Codex which is a wealth of information you should have no problems!

I have one right off the bat, then I’ll probably be cool for a little while.

Would you know if it’s smart to subscribe to Bluehost though an affiliate to get a discount? Or will this obligate me to the affiliate somehow?

I was thining of this one perhaps….

    [Link redacted]

I’d say that would be an okay start, it gives you instructions which seem to be pretty clear on how to get started.

Affiliate sometimes being reseller, but if you can get a discount I’m not complaining and I’m sure you’re not either, this is up to you.

You can go directly through Bluehost and still use those instructions to get started of course, either way is fine.

Thanks for the help tonight, I’ll be getting started soon and come back here with any issues. Hopefully I don’t wear the members here down with too many questions, lol

I’m regestering with Bluehost now, any idea on what I should create for my web address.

    They Have

    .com
    .org
    .net

    Ect

Will any of these have a limiting effect on my blog, it could end up being a website at some point but more than likely just a nice looking blog?

Also what happens if the name I choose for the domain is already chosen?

@mikenet7482, You cannot choose a domain name that is already taken.

I figured as much, what about the .com .org issue?

    Thread Starter mikenet7482

    (@mikenet7482)

Any difference that will impact my site or blog?

    It usually goes like below.

    .com: Commercial (for-profit) websites
        .net: Network-related domains
        .org: Non-profit organizations

But any of the ones they have as an option according to you is okay.

There are differences between us (www.ads-software.com) and WordPress.com

Awesome, makes perfect sense. I wanted to wait until I figured out a few things today, so this is taking me a while. I looked at tips for good domain names today as well, word stormed, and then came up with one so I feel like I’m ready to do this unless something else pops up in the registration process. I have high hopes for this, so I need to get the little things right as I go along. ??
