• Here’s how my process went: Have a remote pc which has artwork on it – I make changes to the artwork and I Use my google drive so I don’t have to necessarily login on the remote computer thinking ooh I’ll just link google drive media library to the wordpress media library and embed that way, no issues right?

so I go through the bother of generating an open auth id needed for this stupid app only to be slapped in the face with the embed screen greyed out:

Telling me to pay for premium features … I knew I didn’t want to bother with this ??

  • Thank you for your review – I completely understand your frustration, and I’m sorry you had such a bad experience.

First of all, I really don’t think you need a plugin or anything complicated at all to achieve what you want. You just need to find out the URL to your Drive file (as a PNG – i.e. the download link), and then enter it into WordPress like this: <img src=”[drive file url]” />. It doesn’t need to go through the Media Library or anything else, just needs to be shared as ‘Anyone with the link can view’. I hope this helps.

In any case, I am sorry you encountered the ‘please upgrade’ message so early on. I can understand that’s annoying. The plugin is mainly useful to people who rely heavily on integrating Drive into WordPress, at which point it is a great time saver for locating the Drive files you need and embedding them into WordPress quickly and easily.

I’m sure you understand that not everything can be provided entirely for free, so to ensure I can continue to provide support and development for free users, I aim to encourage ‘power users’ to upgrade for some premium features and guaranteed support. A handful of the less common file types are omitted from the free version for that reason, on the assumption that a user who has used the plugin regularly for a while may be happy for the option to pay just $19 to support it. I completely agree that if one of these ‘premium’ file types happens to be your first experiment in using the plugin, it’s pretty annoying, and basically too early to ask for your contribution.

I’ll review this – it seems likely that images aren’t sufficiently ‘obscure’ to be good candidates for premium-only file types, so I’ll look into adding that functionality into the next release of the free version. The only concern is that images have more variables involved than other document types, so lead to more support requests, so I’ll just need to be sure we can afford to support them for free.

In the worst case, based on your experience, I’ll be sure to at least make it clearer that images aren’t supported in the free version.

Thanks again for your feedback, and I hope you are successful in your attempt to embed your image! Please feel free to get in touch if you need any help pursuing my suggestion for embedding without any plugin: [email protected].

Again, my aim isn’t to fleece the WordPress community… it is to ensure a sensible balance between premium and free usage so that free users can still be supported without being left in the lurch a few months down the line when a plugin author might otherwise be unable to afford to keep up support and development. Sorry this didn’t work in your case.

Of course, bad reviews don’t help this process, but I completely agree with your evaluation based on your experience, and I will be sure to learn from your feedback.

    Dan

Supporting a developer that takes the time to write you a respectful and thorough response like this one seems like it would be a great investment.
