Way too many external requests added by the plugin

I was very pleased by this plugin, until I noticed that my website was slower than usual. Investigating a little further with GTMetrix, I discovered that more than 10 additional external requests had been added by the plugin during the last few updates (sharethis, l.sharethis, seg.sharethis, tm.sharethis, connect.facebook, facebook, scorecardresearch (??), …)! Apparently, the plugin has been acquired by Sharethis, and a lot of crap is being added to our source codes behind the scenes due to this.
Uninstalling the plugin and replacing it with another one dropped the number of requests from 45 to 27, the loading time from >5 seconds to ~2.5 seconds for the homepage. Proof on GTMetrix, see link (unfortunately from two different servers, but you can clearly see the amount of requests and the shady domains in red).
