In woocommerce I can enable WCS for shipping method USPS and it will pull live shipping rates from USPS with the woocommerce services. However in order to use this AND do flat rate I was told to use advanced shipping packages plugin.
Does this plugin pull live rates for the weight based stuff as woocommerce services USPS does? AND do the flat rate or am I going to have to figure out a way of calculating the weight based vs the flat rate?
I have items with a weight based zone setting to pull live USPS rates like it does with WCS usps method but then also need flat rate and give a total in the cart when checking out.

I just want to be sure of this before I spend the money and then find out it doesn’t do what I need if it’s not going to work.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Advanced Shipping Packages does not pull live rates, like Services does. In a nutshell, what it does is that it allows you to “split” the cart with shipping. So, for example, let’s say you were selling some larger than normal items and wanted a special shipping rate for that, you could group these larger items together in one shipping class (Large Items.) Then, you could use Advanced Shipping Packages to create a “package” that says, when Shipping Class (Large Items) is in the cart, they will be charged with a Flat Rate of $50. All other items will be charged via the live time rates, like normal. In the cart, it will show shipping for both packages- one for the oversized items, and one rate for the normal items. That way the customer can visually see which items are being charged a different rate and why.

This is just one use-case for Advanced Shipping. There are several conditions that you can create your rules based off of, so it kind of depends on how you want to use this.

It sounds like in your case, you’re wanting your weight-based items to be charged via USPS, and then you want an additional Flat Rate in the cart for other items? If this is the case, it seems like Advanced Shipping Packages is the way to go. Of course, all premium products are backed by a 30 days, no-questions-asked refund policy (https://woocommerce.com/refund-policy/), so if you decide to purchase the extension and find that it’s not meeting your needs or expectations, you are always eligible for a full refund within that window.

    Hope this helps!

I forgot to post a link to the Advanced Shipping Packages guide that you might find helpful: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-advanced-shipping-packages-conditions/

This talks about all of the potential conditions in which you can create your “rules” or “packages” with.

    Thanks!

Ok so they work in conjunction together. Or can I guess.
    Yes I sell plants.
Plants weigh 8oz each. I want to charge the customer a live shipping rate via USPS depending on how many plants he purchases.
But I also sell fertilizer and that is shipping with a flat rate packaging.
So if the person buy 5 plants I want him charged a rate for 2-1/2 lbs for the plants because it is unpredictable how many plants a person may buy.
However the fertilizer is knows. 1 bag ships flat rate, so does 2-3 bags.

The fertilizer is heavy and needs the flat rate shipping, the plants are not heavy and many can be place in a container I use and ships cheaper than the fertilizer.

So two different ways are needed.
    thanks!

    Thanks for the details!

Advanced Shipping Packages would work well for this scenario. You would just need to create a “package” for your fertilizer based on “quantity” and “contains product” = fertilizer. You can set multiple conditions per package and create multiple packages, so whenever fertilizer is placed in the cart, they get a flat rate for 1 bag, and another flat rate for 2-3 bags.

Let us know if you need help setting this up, but this seems like it would be a great fit.

    Thanks!
