  • There’s a file in your root directory called .maintenance, if you delete that you’ll be fine.

Well, i’m aware of how to fix the problem after it occurs, deleting the .maintenance file and renaming the plugin fixes the site, etc. I’m trying to figure out how to stop my sites from getting stuck in maintenance mode.

Do you have anything in your web server error logs related to WordPress? It sounds like the plugin upgrade is being killed part-way through for some reason.
