I’ve been creating web stories for a few months but suddenly I’m getting this error when trying to load my web stories in WordPress and none of my stories appear. “unable to load stories the response is not a valid json response” – does anyone have some insight on this?

Hi there, @rosatamm! Thanks for reaching out with your topic. Let’s gather a few more details and check for any possible plugin/theme conflicts.

    1. Could you open your browser developer tools and check for any browser console errors where you see this message? Please take a screenshot and share it with us. You can use services like Jumpshare or Imgur to capture this.

    – Does this issue occur with all other plugins disabled and using a default theme?

    2. Could you send your Site Health information through this form?

    3. Who is your hosting provider and do you have any server-side caching or security measures enabled? (You can submit this info through this form again if preferred.)

There are no console errors. The screenshot can be found here: https://imgur.com/a/wnVoaIR

Have not tested with all plugins disabled. Can’t do this as this is a live site.

We use Linode. Server was built from scratch. There is no server-side caching or security rules in place. The site also uses Cloudflare as a CDN, but there are no firewall rules in place.

The details have been submitted in the form which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/0/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-AeFLOIJd4NLYz7EDUa9vMfzZIoT5Bn1leV3dL2CM_B1C6Q/formResponse

Please le t me know if you need any more information.

@rosatamm Thanks for your repsonse. You can simulate using your site with individual/all plugins disabled by using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin and enable its troubleshooting mode. This mode disables active plugins and switches to a default theme safely because it only affects the experience of the logged-in user.

    – Please enable the Web Stories plugin alone and let me know if the issue is present.
    – Enabling plugins and your theme one by one in this mode may help pinpoint if something else is involved.
    – Note you can disable troubleshooting mode from the plugins page.

Could you please give this a try? We’ll continue investigating on our end too.

@luckynasan I enabled the troubleshooting mode with only the Web Stories plugin enabled and I still get the same result.

@rosatamm It looks like there is a compatibility issue with Web Stories and Asset CleanUp: Page Speed Booster.

Could you please exclude the “web-stories” URL in the settings to prevent optimization on those posts? To do this please navigate to Asset CleanUp Settings > Plugin Usage Preferences > Do not load the plugin on certain pages > enter in the exclusion /web-stories/(.*?)/.

    @rosatamm Great to hear! ??

I have the same problem. I disabled all plugins, updated WordPress and the problem continued. Until separately disable 2 plugins (woo-payment-on-delivery / Fancy Admin UI), force the page load with Ctrl + Shift + R and it worked. But it doesn’t work without forcing the load, the stories don’t show.
