My website is down showing only the following error:
Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home2/ncims/public_html/wp-content/plugins/fruitful-shortcodes/includes/shortcodes/shortcodes.php on line 649

I’m also unable to log into edit my site, so I’m not sure how to troubleshoot.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

  • Yup. Broke my site too. @ncims If you’re a rookie like me, you might have to call your web-host and get them to disable the plug-in. If your webhost has an admin panel outside of wordpress (like cPanel by the host bluehost) you might be able to disable the plug-in yourself from there. that’s what I’m going to try first…

@ncims I was able to deactivate the plugin on the bluehost cPanel (WordPress Tools). am now able to log in to my site…

    Hello.

    Thanks for contacting our Support.

What is your PHP version? There was no changes in file shortcodes.php from January.

Most likely that the reason is in your PHP version:

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/17139264/cant-use-function-return-value…

Today our developer solved issue regarding old version php (5.5) support.

In order not to wait for the update, please try use the latest developers version from GitHub:

    https://github.com/Fruitfulcode/Fruitful-shortcodes

You should replace your data directory to data from the archive. Don’t forget to unzip it. If you didn’t change anything in the source files then your configuration will be not lost.

    Regards.

This doesn’t fix the problem. Still getting error, but now on line 773:
Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home2/algyogy/public_html/kurtiandi.com/wp-content/plugins/fruitful-shortcodes/includes/shortcodes/shortcodes.php on line 773

Same with me. I use stablehost’s share hosting, PHP version 5.6.30.
I try to delete lines 649, 650, 651, 652 from shortcodes.php, and the issue is fix. But I don’t know if the plugin will work fine or not.

I had a problem when I updated Fruitful, as well. But what I found was it was conflicting with the also-updated Jetpack. I could run either/or, but not both at the same time.

Tried installing an older version of Jetpack, but the conflict still existing with Fruitful.

Having the same error occur when I update plugin. Disabling Jetpack has no effect. php 5.6.30

Attempting to update fruitful-shortcodes leads to white screen/no site. Had to delete it via Cpanel.

    Hi @fruitfulcode

Thank you for the response. However, I’m not sure which solution you’re suggesting.

It looks like I’m on PHP version 5.4.45 and MySQL version 5.5.51, with 4.8 of WordPress.

Also we have 2 commits regarding old version php support and recommend to make sure that you are using the latest developers version.

    Regards.

Got the same error. Running the newest version of WP as well as my theme.

Will there be a an update to the plugin soon, fixing this issue?

    Thanks in advance.

It worked for me in our WordPress MU on PHP 5.3 using the development version.
Also, we are using WordPress 4.7
