• My website was hacked and all the files were deleted. Even the WordPress installation itself was deleted. All that remains is an index file that redirects to the hacker’s website.
Does this mean my hosting account was hacked rather than just the WordPress admin? Will I still be able to recover my database?

  • Hi,

Yes, unfortunately this means your hosting account was compromised and not just your WordPress admin. You may still be able to recover your database, but that’s going to depend on whether or not your database login is separate from your ftp/cpanel/hosting ogin. If you have a backup, you can restore that, or, depending on who you’re hosting with, they may have a backup.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should consider changing hosts? Luckily it was a new website with just a few pages of content so it won’t take me long to get it back up but this really opened my eyes to what can happen. I will definitely be backing up my sites from now on.
