    Hi,

I tried to perform an update to 3.5.2 but I guess something happened and I can no longer see the website under Safari and Chrome but the main page (only) is visible under Firefox.

I am unable to log into the wp admin but I still have access to cpanel so I can access the SQL db.

I am thinking of re-installing WP, and manually restoring it. The website has an image gallery, I think its running NEXT Gallery?

If I save the whole site via FTP and backup the DB (from phpmyadmin). I should be able to re-install WP, then copy all the files back into the same places (themes, plugins, gallery, etc) and then restore the DB right?

Any issues I should be aware of or is this a back idea?

    Thanks

  • Yes. Backup your site, and reinstall WordPress. However, you are running WordPress 3.4.2 and it will be better reinstall the same version, set your site alright and then update WordPress.

    Krishna,

Thanks! I did not know that file exists. I will start the backup now and report back. Hopefully, all goes as planned…

Ok, so as a test, I installed 3.4.2 onto another host, then imported my backuped SQL with data and I still can’t get the pages to display or access wp admin.

I guess I need to only parts of the DB (content) and leave the rest alone right?

    Which tables can I ignore?

I think I would want to ignore tables that deal with website address? and users?

I think there is only 1 user, admin.

    Thanks,

or should I try to reinstall WP on the original host and let it detect the existing DB?

or wipe it fresh, and install wp, then import the backup? I am not sure if its a corrupted DB or corrupted WP files that is causing the error.

When restoring any site from backup, you should do a clean install of WordPress first (from a fresh download of WordPress, after deleting all old files) and see if the fresh install works fine, including the admin area. Then you should import the database that you want to restore. Also, make sure that you deactivate all plugins and run the WordPress default theme. Generally, this approach must work, whether on your old host or new host, though it is better to work with your new host.

ok, I did a fresh install of wp on the new server, imported the old DB except for the options table and I was still able to view the page. I uploaded all the old files but when I enabled my theme, it did not display properly and even though all the old posts are in the db, it won’t show in the wp admin. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Which theme did you activate? Try with Twenty Twelve with all plugins off.

    Hi,

I was able to restore my website

    recap:

    – backed up current website using FTP
    – exported the SQL to file

    – deleted all WP files and folders from the host
    – installed WP 3.4.2
    – setup WP so that I view the site with content with the default theme
    – used FTP to transfer my theme, plugins and galleries back to the host
    – applied my theme and ensure everything was working
    – used the auto update to WP 3.6

I consider this issue is resolved.

    Thanks so much!

Glad to to know that you could resolve the issue! ??
