Sometimes autoupdates hit the host max_execution_time limit, or otherwise end in an error, you shall try download release archive
for 5.4.2: https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-5.4.2.zip

Unpack it and overwrite files on your hosting
.php files from archive
/wp-admin/
/wp-includes/
folders
(do not touch /wp-content/ folder)

Use FTP or FileManager inside your hosting control panel.
