• My question is quite simple (surely someone has already encountered this issue). I suddenly noticed that when updating WordPress (it doesn’t matter if it’s manual or automatic update), the website styles are off somehow. That is, fonts change, and so on. Therefore, I got back the website to the previous WordPress version and have not updated WordPress for three months now.

Actually, I have a few questions for the experts:

    • Why did this suddenly start happening? This has never happened before.
    • And what needs to be done to prevent this from happening when updating WordPress?

  • Hi,

Yes, we encountered this issue especially on sites that are poorly maintained. For example: We have inherited a site that was not updated for… …more than 2 years. You have an idea on the outcome after we made an initial update – it’s a nightmare. I’m not an expert but chimming in to your questions:

    • WordPress is constantly updated for enhancements, new features, bugfixes and most importantly, security. So there are some instances where things are depreciated on Core, that the developers need to adjust.
    • To avoid issues on your production site, it’s essential to set up a staging site. This is where you should first update the WordPress Core, plugins, and themes. After making these updates, conduct thorough testing to ensure that no regressions occur before deploying changes to your live site.

Should you find regressions on your staging site, you have to make patch to fix your theme and plugins if you coded these, otherwise look for the updated version from the author.

I wouldn’t suggest to keep using older versions of WordPress Core for a long time since the security issues also evolving, thus maintaining the site properly ensures it can possibly be prevented.

    Cheers!
