Weird ? behaviour (Facebook) last update ?

I don’t have a Twitter or actually use any of the other social links.. so I couldn’t comment if they have this effect.

Been using for the last six months… Updated this morning…

And now, every time I make a post etc… I almost immediately get a hit to my logs from Facebook.
    They look like this….
    This visitor used facebookexternalhit/1.1 (+https://www.facebook.com/externalhit_uatext.php).

I only used to get these “hits” to my logs when somebody actually put a link to my website on Facebook.

I really don’t like this behavior… is this a “new” “feature” or something… or whatever.

Thanks for your plugin… it’s definitely cool !
    Have a great day.

    I deactivated the plugin…

Made sure I wasn’t logged in to Facebook.

    Made a new post… Facebook wasn’t “pinged”.

I reactivated the plugin and visited the post… and Facebook was “pinged” and it showed up in my logs as a visit by Facebook. As mentioned above.

It doesn’t “add” a new number to my Facebook ‘Likes’. Which is good.

But it means every time somebody visits my posts, or whatever, Facebook gets “pinged”. And some how or another, makes Facebook come visit the page.

I don’t really understand what is going on ? And why the plugin would act as though it is “pinging” Facebook as though it were a “bot” .

I’ll have to wait until tomorrow and see if it is showing up in Google Analytics .

I have my own personally logging system… but it is very accurate.
    Along with Google Analytics .

I don’t know if this is a bug… or something you intended to do.
If this is the behavior of the recent update I will revert back to a previous version or drop the plugin.

    Thanks again.

    Well… deactivated, deleted….

Cleared all caches, optimized, and cleaned database tables.

    Reinstalled back to version 1.4.1

And same situation.. I just don’t understand this recent behavior.

The plugin is pinging back to Facebook as though it were a search engine without anybody doing anything but visiting the post etc.

Which.. is actually like Facebook, having it’s own “counter” on my website without my approval.

Hopefully you or somebody more experienced can give me some clues to what is going on. A rather funky coincidence with the update I made early today.

Thanks again.. have a great day !

    Well…

I removed the Facebook “like” button and the “problem” seems to have gone away.

I will, again, look at Google Analytics tomorrow and see if I see anything.

The only “other” thing I did differently with Facebook was early this morning.
I had a bunch of Likes overnight and I was curious to where they came from.
Searching the internet I came across the Developers section to add a code to your website. “People” said it would show who like you.
    It doesn’t.

It just produces a code to put on your webpage.
Which I certainly did not implement .
The link is here… but I surely don’t think that is the problem.. but who knows. I didn’t put the code or do anything but my website in the “box”.

    Well… again !

I just tested all this on another WP site I have. It has Version 1.5.3
    of your plugin.

I did the “Developers” test I mentioned in the previous post… and at this time that didn’t cause the same problem. Unless there might be a slight time delay for the effect to occur.
As mentioned… no code was put on my sites from the “Developers” link I mentioned.
    No other plugins were installed.

    So.. now… I am totally clueless ?

    Hello World !

    It’s me again ?? !!!

Well… this is what I resolved… for some reason.. on my “main” website.

    Settings —>

    Standalone Buttons –>
there is the big “grid” of buttons.
I was using Facebook “button” all the way to the right top corner.

I switched to the top corner left… Facebook button.. and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Well at least for now ??

I will add, that for some reason… the top left button, loads a lot slower than the top right button for Facebook.

But, hopefully… the problem is fixed. I’ll check back in, and mark this is/as resolved… in a day or so…

Well anyway… this all has me stumped… but have a great day !

    Holy posts, Batman. ??

The AddToAny plugin isn’t your culprit here; it doesn’t ping Facebook unless you enable the Facebook counter or Like button.

I haven’t heard of the Like button by itself rousing the facebookexternalhit crawler, but it’s feasible and could be among Facebook’s very recent SDK changes. AddToAny just loads in the official Like button so, if it’s happening, it’s on Facebook’s end.

Yes, AddToAny’s default Facebook button, even with counts enabled, is significantly faster than Facebook’s Like button.

    Thanks Commissioner Gordon ??

Well… looking at Google Analytics this morning I didn’t see any increase in referrals, or any ‘bumps’ in traffic from the behavior.

It was one of those things that occurred yesterday, that seemed like a coincidence, that after updating the plugin, the traffic from the Facebook external links started showing up in my logs.

With the ‘count’ enabled in the button, maybe it was the coincidence that my likes went over 500, and that triggered the hits to my log. Maybe it is something in the SDK of FB that starts after 500 likes.

This morning, I went back and re-enabled the FB button (top right corner of the buttons grid, the one I originally had been using), but without the ‘count’ enabled.

And that does not trigger those funky external FB hits to my site that started occurring yesterday, just from somebody visiting a post, or me adding a post.

Maybe I’ll read somewhere about 500 likes is some sort of threshold in FB SDK or whatever. For now.. I don’t care anymore. I don’t need to see the count number everyday.. and not using the ‘count’ is thusly no big deal .

Thanks again, cheerfully resolved ! Have a great day !
