I’ve got a site on Bluehost and I have a strange issue that really sounds like cache but I can’t figure it out.

I have a plugin for uploading files, and a specific page where the files are listed with newest uploads on the top. When I visit this page, the last two uploads are not appearing. It’s now a couple weeks out of date.

I did some troubleshooting though and found an issue. Bluehost automatically installed their “Endurance Page Cache” plugin into mu-plugins. Ok not a big deal, I deleted all the cache files but Chrome still didn’t show the latest files.

Now it gets really weird. If I do a SHIFT-F5 full refresh, Chrome shows the new files on top! But if I then hit F5 again and do a normal refresh, the latest files again disappear. I can do this all day. Normal refresh, old page, full refresh, new page. I’ve cleared my browser, of course. Opened it in incog window, etc. Same diff.

Now even stranger, every other browser shows the correct content. I open it in Firefox, IE, Edge, or even Chrome on my Android phone and I get the new content. Just not on desktop Chrome!

This isn’t just me either, the reason I’m troubleshooting this is because people all over the country aren’t seeing the newest files (probably using Chrome). But my file counts are climbing, which means people here and there are seeing the new files sometimes.

I’ve narrowed this down to basically just Chrome browser getting fed and old version unless I hard refresh the page. It makes no sense!

I don’t see any Chrome-specific rules, htaccess, plugins, nothing. We don’t have a normal WP cache plugin, just the Endurance thing.

I’m not sure what else I can test here!

    Ideas?

  • Just to help understand a bit more about this issue of yours, have you tried it on other computers with desktop Chrome or was it just your own desktop version (own computer/laptop).

I guess it was that totally clear on your text if you are experiencing that on your own desktop (computer/laptop?) or if you also already identified the problem on other machines.

Also, you might want to consider contacting the author of that specific plugin and start a support ticket about this issue?

Hope this might help someone helping you.

At first we thought it was a global issue until I noticed there were people downloading the file, so some people were seeing the right page at least. Then I started opening it in many browsers and found only Chrome was showing old data.

It’s not just my computer, the very first time I opened the page, having never visited it before, it showed old data. So all the refreshing and browser cache cleaning didn’t help. A hard refresh shows the correct page, but any reload/refresh after that goes back again to old page.

One of the strangest issues I’ve seen recently. I don’t think it’s the Endurance plugin, seeing as how I’ve deleted all the cache files, and even renamed the folder and disabled the plugins entirely. Same problem.
