• Hello Forum,

I track blog hits using Sitemeter, which shows the Visit Entry Page. I keep getting hits to my blog’s favicon page, as follows: https://www.myblog/favicon.ico

When I click on this I get the “Error 404” page (my “404.php” theme file).

Can anybody suggest a reason why so many viewers are landing on this page?

    Thanks

  • Maybe your theme points to a favicon, but you might not have one (btw did you leave out the tld on purpose or by mistake?). It’s always a good idea to have a favicon; try to create a small, simple, square image, create a favicon from it using a favicon generator and upload it to the root of your domain.

    Thanks Funkphenomenon,

tld… I left it out out of ignorance. Does it stand for Tag Library Descriptor?

I suspect you’re right, that my theme points to a favicon, but I can’t figure out how or why. The Sitemeter Visit Details page gives the referring URL as “Unknown.” So I can’t tell how the visitor has arrived at my Error page.

It may be useful to know the theme you are using and a true link to your blog … if you are having trouble finding the information my plugin BNS Support may be useful.

PS: I read TLD as referring to “Top Level Domain” in these cases, such as: .com; .org; or, .net as examples.

oh, sorry I should have provided that. my blog: https://www.canadianenergyissues.com

The theme is News Flash 2.0

@stevieontario – I would strongly recommend you review you source code / theme files as there are well over 100 spam links showing in the source of your “About” page.

    Just an FYI …

bloody hell, you’re right … how did these things get in there??

When you suggest I “review source code” what do you mean?

I suggested reviewing your source code as in looking at the “page source” (right-click | view source) on the page.

Since you also have found the “spam” links, I would suggest looking at all of the files in the active theme folder, or simply replace the theme with a “clean” version. This will work based on the idea the current active theme version is where the issue lies. Otherwise you have a much more serious issue to contend with …

okay, I’ll take your advice. While I’m at it, I probably should also update my version of WP, since I’m running 2.3.3.

yup….that would explain the spam links. older versions of WP are quite susceptible to being hacked

Absolutely! I have yet to find a reason why a WordPress installation should not be running the most current stable released version … and I should have noticed your version was posted in the sidebar of this topic, too.
