2 days ago our site was fine, yesterday we went into the dashboard, and may have updated something. The person that went in isn’t sure. Thinks is was just WP update, but could have been something else too. Or maybe the WP update caused the problem. Today we noticed that our site wasn’t displaying secondary pages correctly, but home page was fine.

It appeared that the problem had something to do with a secondary widget which we never had before which was throwing off the pages. Not knowing what to do, I thought I could do a restore so I went back a few days, hit restore, and now the Home page won’t work, and I can’t access the word press at all.

    Help badly needed.

    Thanks

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Hello James, thank you for the response. Not sure how to reset the plugins. I will try the rename the current active theme to see if that helps.
    Thanks

James, I changed the name of the theme, but still the home page is not displaying. Is there a way to do a manual restore. I have backups of the database from the last several days, plus I believe they are on the server.

I tried the changing of the plugins directory to plugin.hold, but that didn’t work either. I put it back now.

Before restoring anything, try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

If that still makes no difference, try restoring your database backup: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

thanks again for your help. I am currently try to upload the themes and the plugins that were saved on my computer locally 4/16. I renamed the themes to themes.hold, and plugins to plugins.hold so as not to overwrite the directories.

I am hoping this will get me back to where I can login. If not, I will try downloading wordPress again and follow your instructions.

thanks, I will let you know how I am making out.

Did you try restoring the database backup you said you had?

What is the URL of the site with the problem?

Oh, and it sounds like you haven’t tried reinstalling the core files as recommended earlier: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/wesbsite-completely-down-need-help/#post-8848583

    The site is https://www.careerpathwaysonline.com

I tried to figure out how to reinstall WordPress, but couldn’t. I have two other WordPress websites on this server. I assume I just install it in the directory of WordPress for https://www.careerpathwaysonline.com. The site with the problem. The other two are ok.

I also downloaded the PHPmyadmin editor to my local computer, but couldn’t figure out how to make it run. There isn’t an executable.

In the meantime, I have disabled my ADwords campaigns as I don’t want to lose money on clicks that can’t reach my site https://www.careerpathwaysonline.com.

Any help is much appreciated. I suppose that someone who knows how to do all of this can do it rather quickly. Altough I am fairly use to all of this I may be making things worse.

    Thanks again.

I found a different directory that is working. It must have been a test directory or something. I am not sure why it is working, but here is what our site is supposed to look like.
