What are the best practices to change colors?

I’ve modified the appearance of this plugin, 99% via css in a child theme. I prefer a white background, vs black. I then replace default-skin png and svg files that display the color black. If I reference those files in my child theme css the appearance is not right. What would be the best way to reference and/or modify those two files, so that updates are easier?
