What are the rules for user names WordPress will accept?

  • Every result I found in a Google search for username rules led to a Forum topic with many comments, but no actual answers and then the topic got closed!

  • The username structure is dictated by the sanitize_user function in wp-includes/formatting.php

    I don’t really believe it is documented anywhere but you should be able to figure it out from the code.
