I have two WordPress websites – the first for a fishing club and the second a website where I am offering my collection of fishing reels for sale. I run WordFence on both sites and try to take all the precautions I can to prevent unauthorized access. I have no problems with the club site but the second site selling used fishing reels has experienced a high level of attempts to gain access by using either the word “admin” or by guessing the user name. These attempts come from all over the world but mainly from USA, Ukraine, Latvia, Brazil, Poland and more recently China. What is their likely purpose? Are they attempting to hijack my site and use it to spread malware? The site is https://www.reelpleasure.net

  • Hi Nevgoz,

It is impossible to know the hacker’s desired purpose in wanting access to your website or server. It very well could be to spread malware, send spammy emails, or a number of other malicious activities.

The most important thing is to keep your WordPress installation, themes, and plugins updated. Why certain sites are targeted and not others is also difficult to determine. Most of these hacking attempts are automated so the sites targeted often seem random and inconsistent.

If you have Wordfence installed, and you are keeping your site updated, you are doing about as much as you can to deter hackers.

Hope that helps. I am going to mark this post as resolved. However, if you have any questions, or additional information, feel free to update this thread.
