I am using your plugin successfully on my site. I have some posts that span across several categories.

For instance they fall under Services > Branding & Messaging as well as Clients > [Client Name].

For some clients, the breadcrumb path shows as Clients > [Client Name] and for others, it shows as Services > Branding & Messaging.

What determines what the Breadcrumbs plugin uses?

Can I force it to always be Clients > [Client Name]?

Or can I tell the plugin to always use the path the post was access from? Meaning if they got to the post from the Client page it would shoe Clients > [Client Name] or if they accessed the post from the Services > Branding & Messaging page it would show that in the breadcrumbs?

When instructed to use a term from a hierarchical taxonomy (such as a category), Breadcrumb NavXT will pick the first term it finds that has a parent term. Since your posts are members of multiple term hierarchies, the first term hierarchy returned by WordPress will end up being used. Hence the different category hierarchies showing up for different posts.

Right now, something like Order Bender https://github.com/mtekk/Order-Bender can help (you will need to set a preferred category for each of the affected posts). When Breadcrumb NavXT 5.4.0 is released a new filter will be available to better control this (and an update/replacement to Order Bender will be made available sometime after 5.4.0 is released).

When is 5.4.0 coming out? And Order Bender needs to be installed to work with this new filter?

I must have something like that installed. I am seeing a “Make primary” next to the categories. Even with Client chosen as the primary, the breadcrumbs don’t change. I have “Post Types Order” installed perhaps that is adding that “Make primary” selector?

Ah, just found out that it is part of Yoast SEO.

Breadcrumb NavXT 5.4.0 will likely be released around 2016-03-15. Code wise, it’s complete, I’m just waiting for some of the translators to get the translations updated.

As for the “make primary” functionality, I’m not sure what Yoast is doing, but it is likely specific for that plugin. Order Bender alters the term return order for everything. However, it’s successor will not have that behavior and will be Breadcrumb NavXT specific.

Why not roll that into the breadcrumb plugin so it’s an all in one deal?

I worry about conflicts between order bender and Yoast.
