I’m confused by ‘masked’ in the visitor log. There are some entries that appear to be normal non-bot humans which are marked as ‘masked’ and also one bot dlvr.it which is disabled in the table (it views the feed so that it can post to Facebook)

What are they seeing on a page? Can dlvr.it read the feed?

I know it says in the overview:
Masked: The actual page content is not being displayed. (not available in Minimal Engine Management option)
    – but what does that actually mean in practice?

Should I switch to Minimal Engine Management?

    Thanks!

In the Visits log help section (click help button at top right corner), we provide the following information: “Masked: The actual page content is not being displayed. (not available in the Minimal Engine Management option)”

On the plugin’s settings page, if you choose “Block Engine Management Minimal,” as indicated in the help section, the Mask engine is disabled. The choice is yours.

    Our suggestion:

For maximum protection, if you’re using the free version, select Conservative. If you have the premium version, select “Maximum Block.”

Real visitors may briefly appear as Masked for around 1 or 2 seconds, depending on your server’s speed, before being marked as human and allowed to view the content. They will generate at least two entries in the log, with additional entries if they visit more pages. This only occurs one time during their initial site visit (logged as Masked). Bots, on the other hand, are always marked as Masked unless you choose to whitelist them. This only needs to be done once for each IP. On the plugin’s dashboard page, you’ll find a tab labeled “whitelist” where you can do this using string or IP, with some bots already included by default, such as Facebook, but you can remove that by edit the list.

On the visitors log page, you can further manage visitors by adding them to the blacklist or whitelist by IP using the available buttons.

In summary, as explained in the Visitors Log page help section:

    Access:

    • Masked: The actual page content is not being displayed.
    • Denied: With response code 403.
    • OK: The page content is being displayed.

On the plugin’s settings page, if you choose “Block Engine Management Minimal,” as mentioned in the help section, the Mask engine is disabled.

Thanks for the information. But what is the benefit of masking compared to denial? Is a masked page simply blank? I don’t get it!

Mask is the first step. If the bot continues to attempt to load the page, the second time it will be denied. But it couldn’t steal your information. If you bypass this first step, we will only have the option to check the IP, the string, and the referrer (which is already quite a bit). If we adopt the first step, in addition to the above, we will also check more details of the visitor, going as far as verifying the internet access they use, the browser and its capabilities, and creating a fingerprint for them. Then they can be blocked. Consequently, it is much more extensive filtering. This discourages those who want to attack you, and they choose other targets.

Your server won’t be overloaded, and they won’t steal your content and harm your SEO. Or do something worse.
