What does this mean please?

  • On my blog I have a comment from a person with this format for a username:
    Relevant Keyword String :Title of my blog

    This format for URL:
    http: //their-domain.com/relevant-keyword-string-title-of-my-blog

    This format for Content:
    [...] my content from the post the comment was on [...]

    Is this created by some special script that uses people’s own content for creating backlinks to spammer’s blogs, or is it a legitimate way of getting backlinks?

    It doesn’t seem to be adding value to my blog, but it is on topic!

    Thank you, but I’m sorry – I didn’t explain myself properly. The thing I don’t understand is why the person put MY OWN CONTENT in their comment ON MY BLOG!

    It makes no sense! Surely someone visiting my blog can already see what I have written? Why do they need to see it again in a comment?

    None of the research I have read on Trackbacks answers this question! That’s why I wondered if a script had created it.

    I have now found out that I produced a trackback without realizing it, when I linked from one post to another, but WP confused me by clumping trackbacks with comments. When I go to edit it, it seems weird that the content of the ‘comment’ was written by me.

    I visited the url of the trackback person and it was instantly redirected to another site where either they are being spammed by many other spam commenters, or they themselves are using auto scripts to populate their innocent sounding websites with links to porn and medication sites.

    The wiki link says many people have switched off trackbacks due to the abuse of spam. But I have never seen trackbacks that were not spam, apart from my own accidental one.

    Because it shows people on YOUR blog that OTHER blogs find you interesting.

    Look, you write a post. I read it and write my own post: On rustybulb’s site, he says <foo> (and I link). You get a trackback “On Ipstenu’s site, she linked here saying “On rustybulb’s site, he says <foo>.” Now you, and all your readers, know that I’ve read and commented on your stuff, and they come to my site to read what I say.

    That said, if the the content from the other site is a copy from yours, it’s possibly a spam-trackback, and they can be hard to pick out at first. You sometimes have to read the whole site to sort it out :/
