What files are used where

    I’m just getting started with theme development and have spent several days reading through the documentation to get a hold on things. I have a few questions about how some of the template files are used from the default theme.

    I see archive.php and archives.php. I’m not sure which one gets used for what page. I also an not quite sure what attachment.php is used for. I found a page in the docs talking about it but it was not clear to me.

    Actually I was able to figure out attachment.php and archive.php.

    Still not sure when archives.php gets used though.

    After digging deeper, I found out how to create a new page and use archives.php as the template.

    Look in the default theme: archives.php is a Page template!
