• Hello,
I need to add a forum to a wordpress install. What do people recommend? I would like a system that uses the wordpress user system and does not require a separate database.

    Thanks.

  • Take a look at bbpress.

I checked that out is it a stand alone app or a plugin?
It seems like the user system does not work with wordpress?

It is standalone in the sense that it is a separate package and can be run by itself. It will live in a separate directory. It is not a plugin.

However, it *can* integrate in the way you want it to do.

So just to confirm. bbPRESS is the best solution… seems like some of the Plugin options are “easier” and integrate into the user system what would be the advantage of bbPress?

Do you think it will ever come as an install option?

bbpress is the way to go *IF* you know your way around php and mysql on a novice level or better. Based on my experience, it isn’t the kind of thing you can just drop in and have it work like you want it to. Having said that, if you know what you’re doing bbpress is great, and will only get better. I think that someday (though probably not in the immediate future), it will probably be able to be installed just like a plugin. Until then, you’ll have to play around with it a bit to get it integrated properly.

I would also advise you to backup, backup, and backup one more time before you try to install a WP integrated version of bbpress.

You asked for a piece of forum software. These “plugin” options are not actual pieces of forum software.

If you want a forum, build a forum. Don’t shove a plugin in there and pretend that it is a forum.

The Simple Forum plugin is an easy to use forum setup. It natively accesses the wordpress user data. It’s all the forum a lot of us need. It has a lot of attractive fun things which bbpress doesn’t have – so it depends on what you’re looking for really.

does bbpress have “new replies” notifications?

The best things about bbPress are that it integrates beautifully (users, logging in etc) unlike most others, the code being similar to WP (plugins supported the same way etc, can’t use identical plugins but very few changes required) and that it’s improving all the time.
But right now it’s very simple forum software. It does everything you need, and plugins will probably do almost everything you want … but it’s not quite as feature-rich as PHPBB or vB.

I didn’t find it hard to set up and had to change a minimal amount. If you can set up WP, you can set up bb for sure.

Simple Forum is also fully integrated with wp as to users etc. It has a lot more fun stuff than bbpress does, and it’s actually much easier to customize.

WP-forum is an excellent solution. It installs just like a plugin, is insert in a page and give a basic forum (just enough to most blogs).

If you really need a powerful forum, go for an external solution like phpBB which I guess has integration plugins that exist.
