• What gives? This situation cannot be simpler and more exasperating for a WordPress Gutenberg noob.

    A fresh install and any attempt to add a new Post produces an editor “unexpected error” dialog. Install and activate the Gutenberg plugin (5.3.0) and then Blocks can be added and edited. But there is no Reusable Blocks category for adding a new Block and no provision to save one in the 3-dot menu.

    The fresh install is WP 5.1.1 with no plugins on a test site https://caftest.000webhostapp.com. Changing Themes makes no difference.

    Suggestions sure appreciated.

    They still exist in a section called Reusable Blocks: https://cld.wthms.co/KhQ5s6

    That screenshot was taken in WordPress 5.1.1, no plugins active on the site, Twenty Nineteen theme in use.

    The section will only appear if you have saved at least one Reusable Block in the first place: https://cld.wthms.co/F8YDrB

    You can manage your Reusable Blocks at /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=wp_block (you’ll see the link in the first screenshot above too)

    A quick note, Gutenberg is now built into WordPress as of WordPress 5. The Gutenberg plugin simply adds new beta features that are being tested. It is no longer required to use the block editor.

    Thanks @macmanx for the quick response and for taking the time to do screenshots.

    I have experienced what you described before on a site, but at some point lost access to Reusable Blocks. One Block remained that could be used, however the ability to save any was lost.

    So, I started with a simple fresh install for troubleshooting. Using your clue, no plugins, Twenty Nineteen theme, etc., I still get that editor “unexpected error” dialog unless the Gutenberg plugin is installed. Still no Reusable Blocks. I cannot duplicate the results you stated.

    Checking site details, it is still using PHP 7.1 with WP 5.1.1. Any problem there? Then if a Gutenberg plugin is no longer required, is that editor error meaningful?

    Ah, that would be this, which I ran into while checking on your issue. ??

    In short, it’s both a problem in how the Gutenberg plugin saves things into your browser’s local storage (which will be fixed in the next version) _and_ it’s a problem in how Firefox is clearing its local storage.

    Ideally, clearing Firefox’s local storage should, well, clear Firefox’s local storage, which would end the warning after uninstalling the Gutenberg plugin. Unfortunately, I had to fully un-and-re-install Firefox to clear it.

    Aren’t compound bugs fun?

    A possibly quicker fix from the other thread: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/wordpress-gutenberg-editor-crashes/#post-11381183

    Try this: open the console and run localStorage.clear();

    Thanks again @macmanx for the background and links. I did try the command see the other thread: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/wordpress-gutenberg-editor-crashes/#post-11381183
