What happened to “Template: dir” function?

Prior to wp2.2 I was able to use a line in style.css that said “Template: dir” where dir was the directory of another theme’s php code.

Using this method, I could have multiple themes all using the same code but with different style sheets.

Since 2.2.x this function no longer works.
