On a couple of the sites I’ve built there were little arrows next to the top navigation heading to indicate that there were sub-pages. They’re gone. Running Twenty Ten and Atahualpa.

A site that I have NOT updated still has them.

There have never been dropdown arrows in the Twenty Ten theme. For Atahualpa, try asking on https://forum.bytesforall.com/

sub menu indicators, I’ve learned they are called. Thanks. Any way to add them in twentyten?

You could add them by editing the theme’s stylesheet but be warned that your customisations will be over-written the next time you upgrade WordPress or the theme. For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations.
