I updated to 6.1.3 but dismissed the notice to configure the Firewall, thinking I will do it at another time. Right now, my site says under Protection Level: Basic WordPress Protection. The Firewall is currently showing to be in Learning Mode and it will be Enabled in a week’s time.

    1. What happens if I still have not configured the Firewall once the Learning Mode has concluded? Will it still enable? What type of Firewall protection will there be if I don’t configure the firewall but do not disable the Firewall?

    2. If I disable the Firewall, can I enable it and configure it at another time? What will the Protection Level be if I disable the Firewall?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hello blkcatgal,
to completely disable the Firewall, go to the “Firewall” page in Wordfence menu and in the drop-down-menu that says “Learning mode” select “Disabled”. This will completely disable the firewall.

You can enable it later. You should run it in learning mode for a week or so though first to teach the Firewall how to behave and make sure the Firewall does not accidentally block you.

With the Firewall off you will still be protected like you used to previously. You just won’t be protected to the fullest degree. The Firewall is designed to intercept attacks before plugins and themes in your installation have loaded. That’s primarily how it’s more effective.

Thanks wfasa. So if I understand correctly, the protection I would have would be the same that I had prior to this latest WF update, correct? I’m such a newbie to all of this, I’m waiting for a tutorial or something on how to configure the WF Firewall to help me with the configuring. I hope there will be something like this once all the kinks are worked out.

I’m curious as to what would happen if I don’t disable the Firewall and don’t configure it.

    Thanks again.

    Hello again blkcatgal,
yes you can still use the rest of Wordfence and use it for rate limiting, blocking certain usernames etc.

We have documentation on the installation process here. Maybe that can help.

I’m setting this to resolved for now blkcatgal. Feel free to create a new support post if you have any issues while activating the Firewall.
