What happens when Gutenberg is complete?

  • What happens when Gutenberg is complete and the classic editor goes away in 2020 or 2021?
    What happens to all the sites built with the classic editor that do not want to convert to block editing? Do they still function? Do they get forced to convert their sites to block building? Do they get left behind on updates? Esp. Security Updates?

    I bet I am not the only one with these questions and I have seen no answers to them yet! What do the WordPress experts have for answers to these questions?

    If the Block Editor isn’t a complete, simple, and intuitive editor by then I’d expect the Classic editor to remain available or some similar replacement to come to the fore rather than the lack thereof to precipitate a mass exodus to some other CMS.

    Doesn’t that sound reasonable to you?

    Right now there are plugins to revert WordPress backward to a Pre Gutenberg version. Those probably won’t go away either.

    Some clever person will see a need and fill it with some editor acceptable to those who can’t or won’t embrace the Block Editor.

    In the meantime, I’d be running the Classic Editor plugin setup to allow both editors with a default to whichever you might prefer and I’d be banking on the Block Editor to achieve wide acceptance fairly soon.

    As long as there is demand for a non-block editor there will be plugins around. I think there is even a market for paid plugin if the “official” classic editor is not supported anymore.

    The funny thing for me is that I left a CMS with the block stuff behind for a simple editor. Reason was that clients never understood block logic but will always understand Word logic.

    Amazing how many people know how to run a word processor isn’t it??
    re the core block idea. Until the core canvas is drag and drop, the core block builder will never be understood. Ever. Personally I am learning Elementor which is pretty good overall. Reviews between Elementor and Beaver Builder rate both quite highly.

    That said, would it not be nice to use classic to build a page on a drag and drop canvsas so the pretty elements could be achieved just the way the editor wants them. What a concept. Easy editing, Easy display layout. Wish I was a code slinger.
