I am experiencing MAJOR ISSUES with my site as well after updating two days to V5.3
First I was told to change “permalink” structure because all my archived posts disappeared, but less than 24 hrs later, whenever I try to login -even as admin- I get a 404 Error.
Even “switched” back to Classic Editor.
I have a membership website and this is latest update is bunk. My paying members are not even able to login.
One minute I’m logged into site, next my Admin page returns a 404 error and I can’t get in.

Called Bluehost to double check it wasn’t server issues, and they are showing ISSUES FROM WORDPRESS.com/org

Telling people to jump through hoops and try a bazillion things that DON’T work is not sufficient.

Even the Support Forum is having issues with submitting questions…have submitted a few questions only to have the support page return an “oops, page not found” or 404 ERROR. WT?
    Even TURNED OFF ALL PLUGINS.

Sorry for yelling, but I’m mightly frustrated and frankly pissed because I keep getting told that it’s SOME OTHER ISSUE when in fact, everything was working great until latest update.

Guess I’ll be downgrading back to v4.something or other and looking for web building service. from this point forward, because honestly, not everyone that utilizes WP understands what “rest apis” or Phps and string theory of the cosmos of whatever coding language is being thrown at those of us who don’t understand it.

    Yes…I know..read the documentation.
This does no good when it’s all written in Dead Patagonian language (which is what it is to me).

Terribly disappointed with this latest upgrade and the seemingly blase response from the WP Team.

EDITED: to correct line on Bluehost.

  • Did you need the plugin to downgrade back to 4.9.9?

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-downgrade/

I used this one the other week when I had a very old theme on a client site that really didn’t like 5.0.2 so I know it worked okay.

I won’t advise you on a hosting service but I’ve worked on a few Blue Host sites and found their service and documentation perfectly fine. I’ve never worked with their support staff so I can’t speak to that subject either.

    @jnashhawkins:

    Hey..Thanks for responding.
I edited my original post, because I have NO issues with Bluehost.
They do have great support and tech knowledge.

What I meant to say was find another website building program/company.

I have v4 backups and will go back to those.
Just hate to have to lose all the NEW work, articles and videos that I have put my heart and soul into…but it is what it is, no?

    Thanks again.

Wait… before you go with the backups at least try that plugin I recommended.

That may preserve your new content and save you further headaches as the plugin doesn’t back the site to an earlier time… it just reverts the version backward.

The backup doesn’t necessarily lose your content either but the downgrade doesn’t seem to do anything much with the database so that should be safer.

Worst case you’ll then have the backups to fall back to if you need them.

Also, do some testing as you can once you revert back. Surf the site extensively paying extra attention to previous problem areas.

    @jnashhawkins:

Am downloading the plugin right now!
Won’t activate until tomorrow as I’ve been jacking around with the site for several hours and emailing/newslettering my 200 members informing them of the issue.

I can say that I have my BlueHost File Manager backups – not those through the WP dashboard on Bluehost, but real zipped files saved to external drive.
I did one a day before I updated to v5.3 but the site was acting wonky then too – this was Jan. 11th.
I forgot to do one in December because I always take the site offline at the end of the year for cleanup…
Last good backup was Nov 2018.
So hopefully if the plugin doesn’t work, my trusty FM Backups will save me.

But this is what I’m going to tell you:
I’m a veteran and former court reporter…soon as the government opens back up I’m heading back to school to get my certificate in computer coding, database query and server stuff
Then I’m heading over to Joomla!

The backup/reinstall will take me a few days, so you won’t hear from me over these next hours, but I PROMISE to come back and update you on everything.

    Thank you soooo much!
    Good night!
My eyes are bleeding they’re sooo tired.
    Namaste
    Tara
