What is shared and what is not?

  • Well, this must have been addressed somewhere, so if anyone can link me to it…

    I am about to use ClassiPress and I need to use the multi-site feature since I am going to have 20+ sites…one for each state in the country.

    Now, what is actually shared? I know I have one install so how far can I go? I need to have different templates for each site because each state has a different name…is that possible? Members log in at one site, are they automatically logged in for all?

    I am having a hard time trying to understand where the line is drawn… there must be a FAQ somewhere…or not?

  • For the theme question: Some themes have multiple mini-styles that you can enable. For example,

    • Style 1: Red
    • Style 2: Blue
    • Style 3: Green
    • Style 4: White
    • Style 5: Black
    • Style 6: Purple
    • Style 7: Yellow

    So this is what my theme ends up having a hierarchy like this.
    Each administrator of their own site (in their administration panel) will see options like this.

    In sum, this diagram shows how 1 theme for multiple sites can contain different styling variations. Most of the time these variations are just in color and sliced images and some random css. It’s like giving a theme different skins.

    If the theme pull in the site name from backend settings, then it is specific to each site. (hint: 99% of themes do this)

    they log in to the network as a whole, yes.

    You are running your own mini wordpress.com – if you are familiar how themes work over there, and what parts change vs what stays the same, then it’s easy to figure out.

    options pages and wdigets are site-specific. any php functions that pulls blog-specific items (like a page listing) is specific to that page /site.

    If it’s hardcoded in the theme itself (like a link to the designer’s site in the footer) then it’s that way for all site using that theme.
