• I would appreciate any recommendations of how to go about building a web developer portfolio website.

I would like to become a web developer and want to build a website for a friend that I could use to showcase some of my design/development skills for future employers.

My questions is I am not sure the best way to go about doing this using WordPress, I want to be able to demonstrate my coding skills, by manipulating a theme and to show my general knowledge of how to build a good website, but I am thinking using a powerful theme with a page builder isn’t the best way to achieve this?

Does anyone have any thoughts that could be of help?

    Many Thanks!

  • Hello @texas001

The Best way to prepare your own Portfolio would be to use some ready made theme available on WordPress Theme Inventory or else you can also opt for some paid theme from codecanyon.

In case you feel theme or Page Builder won’t help much, you can plan for some online tool like carbonmade Or portfoliobox.

Let me know if this helps.

    Thanks,
    Kartik

    Hi Texas001,

Here are some intermediate WordPress examples you could code yourself.

You could edit an existing theme by adding your own custom post type called ‘portfolio’. And then write a query which loops trough all portfolio items. This is a great way to expand on the existing theme as your use the CMS to fill content and alter a template to show that same content.

You could also try and add another menu and retrieve it on the website in the header.php for example. This is a bit easier I think but still a good way to get to know WordPress.

    Hope this helps!

Hi Kartiks16, thank you for your recommendations, it maybe useful in the future to display my work, but my question at this stage was more about how I can demonstrate my coding skills in WordPress. There are some wonderful powerful themes and page builders, in WordPress but I am concerned of using anything too premade and WYSIWYG, witch has limited scope for manipulating and does not demonstrate my design and development skills.
