What is the best theme to modify?

What, in people’s opinions, is the best theme to start with when you want to heavily modify it’s design?

I expect to change many things about the theme to a point where it’s unrecognizable from before, but I don’t have the ability to start from scratch. Anybody have a recommendation as to a good, stable, up-to-date theme that I should start with?
