What is the function of Primary

I have a multisite that uses Domain Mapping to redirect from subdirectories.

In Settings->Domains, when you add a new domain, you have the option of checking “Primary”. What does this actually do? It doesn’t seem to make a difference if all of my domains are marked as Primary or if just the one I’m using on the root site is Primary. But maybe I’m missing something.
