What is the ideal thumbnail featured image size?

  • Curious what’s the ideal image size for the featured image, which becomes the icon on the Portfolio page.

    I’ve uplaoded 234×234, and it shows up square.

    I’ve uploaded 1024×1024 and it gets cropped rectangular.

    I’ve uploaded 480×480, and it was cropped rectangular.

    I’ve uploaded 271×271, and it was cropped square.

    I’ve uploaded 460×460, and it was cropped rectangular.

    I like the rectangular look, but can’t find any info on what size your upload needs to be for it to crop rectangular, and is there a larger size to upload to in case the theme is changed.
