• Hello

I have a WordPress site that is up and running for several months now.
I also installed (among others) the Email subscribers plugin to enable sending email to users whenever I publish new content.

Every once in a while I get an email about new user registration. I thought these are users who subscribed to my newsletter and expected them to be on my email subscribers list of the plugin. But instead I find them in the users list, where they appear as subscribers.
What is the meaning and of this subscription ? Do they get a notification mail whenever I publish new content ?

    Thank you

    Guy

They get nothing, unless you install a plugin that takes advantage of WordPress’s users system for subscriptions.

To make a very long story short, many years ago the WordPress developers decided to create a very limited user role which could simply be extended by plugins. They figured that sounded great for subscription plugins, so they called the role Subscriber. The role could only edit its own profile, unless otherwise extended by a plugin.

To date, only I think 2 (or perhaps just 1) subscription plugins make use of WordPress’s registration system. The rest all use their own registration system, and it sounds like yours does too.

If you have no reason to allow anyone to register for WordPress’s users system, uncheck “Anyone can register” at Settings -> General in your site’s Dashboard.

    Thanks for the answer.
But what about all the users that subscribed to that users system ? Did they really mean to subscribe to my newsletter ? Should I just delete them ?

They may have meant to subscribe to your newsletter, or they could just be bots looking to get past WordPress’s “register to comment” anti-spam feature (one of many anti-spam features).

Do any of the email addresses seem legitimate to you? If not, best to just delete them and close registration at Settings -> General.
