What is the point of body_class?

body_class() outputs page specific css classes into the html of the site;

Why can’t I just add the css into the stylesheet?

you still need to add those css into the stylesheet, but without the css classes in the html, these would have nothing to refer to.

The body_class is fabulous.
Say you wanted a different background per page, you could so something like:

body.page-id-2 {background:url…}
body.page-id-4 {background:url…}
body.page-id-6 {background:url…}
