What the best pratice when hosting multiple WP sites and domains

  • Hi,

    I’m looking to design and host multiple WP sites and demo sites as well as my own WP site.

    The hosting account I have allows me to have multiple subdomains, addon domains and databases.

    My website will always be the primary domain so visitors going thecoolestsiteever.com they will get the home page created within WP and the posts page will be on mysite.not/blog.

    When I get a customer, their domain will be included as an Addon domain but before that I want to be able to show them their working WP site.

    If I create a folder on the root of the server ‘newcustomer01’ will I be able to install WP into ‘newcustomer01/blog ok so that the customer can view their site at mysite.not/newcustomer01 & mysite.not/newcustomer01/blog?

    If that’s ok, when they transfer their domain and I put it as an Addon will there be any issues when it comes to moving their WP site or will this mean that I won’t have to move the site\database?

    Sorry if that’s all a bit convoluted and hope you understand what I’m getting at ??

  • That all sounds like it won’t be a problem. WP will let you work that way.

    The only thing that you’ll need to do when you get the domain name pointed to each site is to update the URL in the admin area, and if you have any hard-coded links or images in your posts, you’ll need to go through them and change those to the new domain.

    Thanks Michael that’s good news ??

    I’m assuming I won’t have to make any database changes then? I just go into WP Dashboard – Settings – General and change the WordPress Address (URL) and the Site Address (URL), Save changes and it will be good to go?

    As i said before…

    You will still need to do this.
