What exactly must go into the “Tags” box in the right hand sidebar? What I am doing is finding all the significant words in my content and, with commas separating them, entering them into the box. Is this the right way to do this, because I end up with a large number of tags that way. sometimes almost 100. This just dosent feel right?

    Thank you,

    Marius

  • Tags are simply another way for you to organize your content and provides another way for your users to navigate the site. So 100 tags per post is way too much.

I like to think of categories and tags as menu items.

    Categories would be
    Lunch
    Dinner
    Breakfast

    Tags would be
    Sandwich
    Soups
    Salads

You should take a look at your entire blog and think, what would help my users. How will they navigate and then come up with 5 – 20 categories and 5 – 30 tags.

Here’s another article that discusses tags – https://wpmu.org/is-tagging-actually-beneficial-to-bloggers/

Thanks Christine. You were very helpful. I get it now.

    Great metaphor, Christine!

I also try to reserve proper nouns to the tag area only, as they can be helpful in many instances of WordPress depending on your industry.
