What would you like to see in a theme?

  • Hey, people.

    I’ve been working with WordPress for a while now, and I absolutely love it. I’ve created a couple online magazines based on WordPress in the recent past (Split Magazine and Nirali Magazine), and since then, I’ve been getting quite a few e-mails requesting me for a magazine-style WordPress theme.

    I’ve finally decided to create and release a theme to the community. This is the first time I’m creating a theme for release to the general public (all my themes before this have been custom-made for clients) — what, according to you, makes a good WordPress theme (colours, specific features, compatibility with any specific plugins, stuff like that)? I’ll do my best to create a good theme based on your feedback ??

    Hey, guys. thanks for the awesome response. I will be starting my own blog @ https://www.themasterplan.in in about 2-3 days’ time. I’ll be blogging about WordPress and other tech stuff, and I’m planning to release a few themes as well, the first of which will be this magazine theme.

    I’ll get started on this magazine theme on March 1. It’ll probably take me about 10 days or so to release it. If you have any additional feature requests, etc., please make them before March 1. Thanks ??

    Here are some things I can think of:

    * Being able to control what goes into features boxes and what goes into News headlines by category. (News category items goes into news listings and Feature category goes into boxes etc)
    * Being able to choose the number of features “boxes” that are visible on the front page.
    * Being able to choose the number of news headilnes visible on the front page.
    * A news section that lists a number of news items, grouped by date and with a read more link to the full article.
    * A WYSIWYG editor
    * Archive of all articles grouped by month.
    * User and role management, be able to handle multiple authors.
    * Similar articles (automatically listing a number of articles that are similiar to the artciel being read)
    * RSS
    * Games list (title, developer, publisher, release date/status)
    * Event list (name, time and date of duration, location, type)
    * Integration to forums (one user login to both WP and forums)
    * Integration with gallery software.

    @ Kheldon – I’m just making a theme, man. Some of the stuff you’ve asked for falls outside the scope of a theme ?? You might want to look at some plugins/hacks to accomplish stuff like that.

    Hehe, I basically copied over some stuff I had on a spec list. I know most of it falls into plugins. ^_^

    Themasterplan.in isn’t up yet….so how is the project going? Sorry for that, but I’m just so exited about this theme!

    I’m definately up for a magazine layout similar to Nirali Magazine. I’m anxious to get started.

    Fantastic work man.. cant wait to see what you come up with. Hopefully it can be a direction I can take my site.

    I am very exited and it has been 13 days since you said you were gonna start a blog about this theme, is there any update on the theme or the blog you were gonna start? Sorry again for my nagger, I am just so exited!
