• For a while, I’ve had 404 errors whenever something needs to access update.php.

I try to use the automated features to install plugins or the latest WP update; plugin updates install fine but since they can’t load update.php they don’t reactivate. Not much of a problem. This is, however, stopping me from doing WP updates completely!

What happens is I go to the plugin page, click add, pick a zip file, upload it and it finishes that whole part, but once it is to finalize and reactivate, I get a 404. The exact same happens for the WP updates.

I guess I can start doing them manually, but I’d prefer to fix my update.php (if that is even the issue)… Any ideas? It used to work fine and just suddenly stopped a few days ago. The odd thing is that certain plugins pull through and have no issues, but they’re pretty rare.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all but the plugin you want to upgrade to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems?

I deactivated everything and everything was fine; it appears my theme is the problem. How can I figure out what I did to cause that in the theme? It has been working fine, so I must have edited something that causes issues…
