when i export a backup i get a tiny file – how can i fix it?

What exactly are you using to export a backup? Is it a particular plugin? If so, which?

Is it Tools -> Export? If so, that’s just a content export, not a backup. We have some backup methods detailed at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Backups

is there a free reliable plugin?
both the dropbox plugin for back up the another plugin didn’t work when a restore was needed.

i don’t have time to read through your link now but i will try to understand it later.

when i searched for backup plugins i got different results from the ones in the link you gave

It’s a direct link to all the plugins tagged as “backup” rather than a search, sometimes it’s a bit more efficient. ??
