When I follow someone, what is supposed to happen?

When a user follows another user, what is supposed to happen? The plugin is working great for allowing users to follow each other, but once a user “follows” another user, no notifications seem to be given. What does “following” mean, as far as this plugin goes? What notifications are given? Thanks.
