    Hi

I have a client site who has had NO issues with google rankings up until recently not being found in google.

I figured out the problem that GOogle wanted new verification of the domain name for some reason. This was done years ago, but now all of a sudden wants it again.

But when I go in there, it still says “Couldn’t fetch” whhen I resubmit the Sitemap again ….

I can’t understand what is wrong.
I have uploaded the Sitemap again with no extra / etc ..
I have been googling to see what else is the issue.

    URL is https://domainname.com.au/sitemap_index.xml
So when I submit sitemap to google I just add the last section with NO extra / slash
    sitemap_index.xml

So I am doing it correctly as I do it all the time.

Domain is now verified again with Google. Sitemap still cannot fetch.

So not sure what is causing it.

When I click on the “Couldn’t fetch” writing in red it says:
    Sitemap could not be read
    Genearl HTTP error.
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap

But that’s all the info I get.

Any advance would be great. Could it be my sitemap on the WordPress website somehow ?

    Thanks
    Kristin

Sorry to hear about your sitemap. We have some questions:

    1. Can you please confirm if you are on the latest Yoast SEO 17.8?
    2. Can you share your sitemap URL so we can check?
    3. Can you share a screenshot of the error?

How do I share a screenshot in here ?

    Hi @kristinubute

You can upload a screenshot to a website like snipboard.io or imgur.com and share a link here. Please also do share your sitemap URL so we can check and see if the sitemap is loading on our end. We do know that sometimes Google Search Console does indeed report a false positive/incorrect ‘couldn’t fetch’ error (as per this forum thread) and this resolves after a day or two, once it has been able to crawl and update the status, so you may want to check and monitor that as well.

I can see everything in the sitemap no issues …

Yes I have the latest Yoast SEO installed

    https://snipboard.io/yiAqEm.jpg

When I submit the sitemap I get: Sitemap submitted
    https://snipboard.io/BxRrZ8.jpg

Bit concerned about what has caused it or happened and HOW to rectify it.
Google has never had issues BEFORE reading the sitemap up until recently.

    https://snipboard.io/QOu706.jpg

When opening the Sitemap in Google Webmaster NO issues and you can see everything all normally.

    https://snipboard.io/qENzya.jpg
    I’ve requested INDEXING also BUT

This is so frustrating as I’ve never had issues with sitemaps before.
Hasn’t resolved for over 3 months.

I also found here it says “URL will only be indexed if certain conditions are met.
    LINK to this
    https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9012289#will_i_be_indexed

Can’t see anything in there that will help.
The website has been indexed for over 10 years so not sure WHY all of a sudden in last 4 months it cannot read the sitemap.

Hope my information helps to resolve the issue.

    THnaks

    HI

Any ideas on how to fix this issue ?

It’s not reading the sitemap properly anymore.

    Thanks

I can see in google searches, that other people had same issues, and others had to try another plugin and worked.

I really don’t want to try another plugin, but if I cannot resolve it, I will have to.

I tried the XML Sitemap validation tool – https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
    Says:

    Sitemap is valid	No
    Warnings	-
    Errors

        Incorrect http header content-type: "" (expected: "application/xml")

    What does this mean ?

    Regards

    (@kristinubute)

    * Sitemap has correct https://
    * I can read the contents of the sitemap if I put into Google
    * Google will NOT read it anymore – Incorrect http header
    * I have NO www in front as website it https://domainname.com.au
    * Sitemap validator error (as above)
    * Google cannot fetch
    * Tried Google Search Console using the URL Inspection Tool – says URL is not on Google
Tried to request Indexing and it does NOT
    * Says INDEX REQUEST REJECTED **

All cache has been cleared and it is NOT this.

So frustrating as I’ve never had this issue for a client before.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi @kristinubute

We’re trying to access your website and the respective sitemap (/sitemap_index.xml) but it looks like the website isn’t loading as expected – https://snipboard.io/7xurEk.jpg

Could you please first check if the website is accessible from your end?
