When Updating Core, Fatal error: Out of memory in includes/class-http.php

Try increasing the memory available to PHP:

I don’t have access to my php.ini file, I added

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');

to the end of my wp-config.php file, set the options in my 1and1.com backend to use php5. Adding the code to my .htaccess file in the / directory just threw a Server error on the site.

Still no automatic updating.

Disabled all my plugins. Went through like a dream (a good one).
