When you click "Visual" the PHP gets formatted

Does any else find that when you change from “text” to “visual” your PHP get’s buggered up?
E.g. > converts to & gt; as if it is text! I thought if my code was between [php] and [/php] it would be exempt?
Is there any way to stop that?
